I’m Susan McNaughton, what’s your name? What brought you here today?
If we were to meet face to face, we’d start a conversation like this. That’s just being sociable, and friendly. We’d ask some questions back and forth and establish some common ground, then we’d be having a proper conversation – working out what we both like, and maybe what we don’t like. But this is the internet, and I’ve only got a few seconds to catch your attention before you click off and go somewhere else, so let’s cut to the chase.
Do you like getting sales calls out of the blue, usually just when you’re in the middle of family time – preparing a meal or helping with homework? No, me neither.
Do you ‘switch off’ mentally when adverts come on TV, or go off and do something like make a cup of tea or do a quick chore – and what’s more, do you believe the hype of advertising anyway, or are you more into enjoying the artwork, the tune or just find the endless repetition annoying?
Are you overloaded by emails from places you’ve bought something once – or does your doorstep thud each morning as the postman brings the latest load of catalogues or junk mail?
But if you want something – a holiday, your car serviced, a new piece of furniture, a meal out – what do you do? Do you just go off and buy the thing you’ve just seen advertised, or do you take time to think it over?
You start to research, don’t you? You ask a friend to make a recommendation, or you do a search on the internet to find out more. You might find a business you like the look of, but how do you know about the people who run that business – do they want to help you? Do they have what you need? If they don’t, do they recommend an alternative?
Now let’s turn this around. Do you work in business? Are you a large business? A small one? A medium-sized business? How do you talk to your customers? Your guests? Your clients? Your potential staff? Your current staff?
Do you have any of these conversations on-line? What are others saying about you? Are your competitors winning more customers than you, or are they complacent?
You get the picture – I ask lots of questions! But when we meet, I’ll be just the same – and what’s more I’ll be interested in how YOU answer.
