Using Social Media for Community Projects

There are a couple of community projects which I’m involved in at the moment as I have a holiday cottage in the lovely seaside village of Crail in Fife.  This year, I’ve been trying to encourage others in the village and others with holiday homes to use some of the tools at their disposal to help promote their businesses or holiday homes.

One such effort is to get all the holiday home owners to add their last minute availability to a Facebook page I’ve set up for the purpose, called Crail Last Minute.  With some encouragement, some of the owners are starting to post their availability for the next six weeks or so.

The second project is also in Crail, where we’re planning the first Crail Food Festival, to take place in June 2011.  Part of the publicity for this will involve our Twitter and Facebook activity.

I noticed the other day on Twitter that there is a call for social media “Surgeons” to help out with community projects here in my home town of Edinburgh, so if this is something you could lend some time to (and get some experience into the bargain), then maybe you’d consider helping out.

Are there local groups where you see great use of social media techniques and tools?  Maybe you’d like to share some in the comments below (ooh, I hope the comments field is working now …)
